Supreme Court Justice and former University Law professor Antonin Scalia spoke at the Law School Friday to present the 12th annual speech within the Henry J. Abraham Distinguished Lectures Series, which is sponsored by the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Freedom of Expression. ... In his lecture, Scalia discussed the merits of originalism as a method of constitutional interpretation. The originalist approach, he said, views the Constitution as no different from any other legal text, such as a statute. “That is to say, the Constitution has a static meaning that does not change from generation to generation,” though...

[This article is based on the book, 'Restoring the Original Bible' by Dr. Ernest L. Martin, ASK Publications, Portland, Oregon, 1994] Our Bibles Are Different You may be not be surprised to learn that the Bibles that the Christians use today (also in the past centuries) are not the same as the original Bible known to the Jewish world and to the early Christians. First, we use translations, not the original tongues (Hebrew and Greek); second, there are minor textual variations; and third, we do not have the original autographs. What should surprise you (unless you have read on Bible's...

Scientists have unearthed remains of a primate that could have been ancestral not only to humans but to all great apes, including chimps and gorillas. The partial skeleton of this 13-million-year-old "missing link" was found by palaeontologists working at a dig site near Barcelona in Spain. Details of the sensational discovery appear in Science magazine. The new specimen was probably male, a fruit-eater and was slightly smaller than a chimpanzee, researchers say. Palaeontologists were just getting started at the dig when a bulldozer churned up a tooth. Further investigation yielded one of the most complete ape skeletons known from...

Arnold Schwarzenegger probably has stunk up his Sacramento smoking tent with more than a few celebratory cigars of late. Nine months ago, after a special election wipeout with few parallels in U.S. history, the governor looked like a political shooting star whose time had quickly come and gone. Nowadays, basking in the on-time passage of a generally lauded state budget and facing a charisma-challenged Democratic opponent with big weaknesses on both taxes and the environment, Schwarzenegger appears on a clear path to re-election. Hold your cheers. The conventional wisdom – sure, he punted on addressing that pesky structural deficit for...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - In a further blow to the credibility of the South Korean researcher who claimed to be the first to clone a human embryo, the journal Science said Tuesday it's now investigating a 2004 study it published that first brought Hwang Woo-suk to prominence. At issue are two vital photographs that Hwang used to illustrate his breakthrough claim. They appear identical to photos published previously in another journal on an unrelated topic. The latest allegation adds to a long list of charges leveled against the fallen "cloning king" in the past month. Hwang maintains his central findings,...

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - The original manuscript of a paper Albert Einstein published in 1925 has been found in the archives of Leiden University's Lorentz Institute for Theoretical Physics, scholars said Saturday. The handwritten manuscript titled "Quantum theory of the monatomic ideal gas" was dated December 1924. Considered one of Einstein's last great breakthroughs, it was published in the proceedings of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin in January 1925. High-resolution photographs of the 16-page, German-language manuscript and an account of its discovery were posted on the institute's Web site. "It was quite exciting" when a student working on his...

DALY CITY, Calif. (AP) - Victor Edward Willis, the original policeman in the 1970s music group the Village People, was arrested by real police who allegedly found a gun and drugs in the former star's convertible, authorities said. Willis, who co-wrote disco hits such as "Macho Man" and "In the Navy" before leaving the Village People in the late 1970s, was taken into custody late Monday after an officer stopped the musician in his Chevrolet Corvette in Daly City, just south of San Francisco. Willis also had an outstanding $15,000 felony warrant for possession of narcotics, police said. Police said...

In a more perfect United States there would be a separation of politics and government rather than an illegitimate separation of church and state. The fact that there is absolutely no mention of the latter in the US Constitution hasn’t stopped ideologues and activists from forcing that bit of fiction down our collective throats. Neither has the constitutionally derived authority of We the People thwarted them from hijacking the act of governing for the benefit of politics. I don’t blame those who haven’t a clue as to how our government is supposed to work for their lack of knowledge. US...

When US Representative Henry Hyde spoke about the bill that would penalize the United Nations half the dues it extorts from the US annually for not embracing reform he included as shocking a statement that has ever been uttered on Capitol Hill. He alluded to the fact that those who represent us in Washington DC need to be “good stewards of the people’s money.” Of course, for this statement of common sense to have any meaning those in Washington would first have to understand that the money they “appropriate” isn’t theirs, it’s ours, and that they work for us. I...

In a recent appearance at the Heritage Foundation, an author who has written many great histories gave some insight as to why the Ivory Tower produces such, at best, lackluster ones. "Many people say, 'Why bother with history?,' and unfortunately many of them are in education," best-selling writer David McCullough said at the Heritage Foundation last Friday. McCullough has penned best-selling historical biographies of American Presidents John Adams and Harry S. Truman. "Why is it possible that an otherwise intelligent person does not know that the original 13 colonies were on the East Coast or who George Marshall was," McCullough...

The Pinellas County medical examiner's office in Florida plans to release its autopsy report tomorrow on Terri Schiavo – findings her family hopes will shed light on the cause of the collapse that left her severely brain-damaged 15 years ago. Schiavo, 41, died March 31, nearly two weeks after the feeding tube that had kept her alive was removed under a court order obtained by her husband, Michael Schiavo. Her death ended a bitter legal battle between Michael Schiavo, who said his wife did not want to be kept alive artificially, and her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler. Both Michael...

Today's battles over judges have too often broken down along party lines. Democrats sought to filibuster judicial nominees. Republicans worked to guarantee nominees an up-or-down vote. Even the uneasy "truce" achieved last month was the result of politics, not principle. The partisan division is unfortunate, because the judiciary is no place to be playing politics. "Judges shouldn't be liberal or conservative, since the Constitution isn't liberal or conservative," as President Ronald Reagan once observed. Taking the politics out of the judiciary is a key tenet behind the concept of constitutional originalism. That's the idea that judges should issue rulings based...

To lighten up our week (I've been up to my neck in deadly serious stuff !),I propose a thread devoted to original limericks. Nothing obscene, mind you,but you have to make them up on the spot.A little "juvenile" humor - such as the following - is okay. Should there be a prize? Maybe an autographed full-length photo of The Hero of Chappaquiddick in a bathing suit? (Well, okay: maybe not !) Without further ado, I present: GRANNY FRANNIE Frannie the flatulent granny Once filled every nook, niche, and cranny Of her church with such vapors It made all the papers. "Where's everyone gone?",cried old...

Stop Making Sense Earlier this week, a once-prominent American politician weighed in on the questions of judicial appointees, the filibuster and religion in politics, and he made a lot of sense. Here's what he said: We began as a nation with a clear formulation of the basic relationship between God, our rights as individuals, the government we created to secure those rights, and the prerequisites for any power exercised by our government. "We hold these truths to be self-evident," our founders declared. "That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. ....

Jimmy Hartner was shipped off to Viet Nam when he was 21. He enlisted in the Army in 1968, and managed to get into an area where he could make use of his considerable skills — a near genius ability to design, build and repair anything mechanical or electronic. His primary job was to keep electronic devices in excellent working order, but the Army also certified him as an expert marksman. One of his duties was to protect ammunition dumps at night, and such duty resulted in frequent fire fights with the Viet Cong. Jimmy was put in the position...

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 6) - James Belushi has sued his next-door neighbor, actress Julie Newmar, accusing her of a "campaign of harassment" to drive him from his home. In a lawsuit filed Nov. 2, the 50-year-old actor claims Newmar vandalized his estate by destroying a fence and landscaping. He also contends she bad-mouthed him to neighbors and friends, spied on his family and caused a nuisance by playing loud music directed at his backyard. A telephone number for Newmar, who played Catwoman in the 1960s television series "Batman," was not immediately available. A call to Belushi's lawyers was not returned...

I know she'll never do it, but I would LOVE to see this done to get CBS to take action against Dan Rather. PATRICIA HEATON, star of Everybody Loves Raymond should go on strike from the CBS hit show until Dan Rather does one of the following: (a) release the original memos in question for independent scrutiny or (b)if he doesn't have the originals, he should get the source to release the originals or reveal the source or (c)retract his report and apologize to President Bush or (d)resign or get fired. Patricia Heaton is one of the few Republicans in...

COHOES, N.Y. — In its 19th-century heyday, pioneers, immigrants and cargo swarmed the Erie Canal, a bustling gateway that opened up the country's heartland and the West. When the canal faded from prominence at the turn of the past century, a myth arose that it had been destroyed.

Translating the Bible The Hebrew text of the Old Testament now in use is a highly standardized text that was consolidated, fine-tuned, and faithfully transmitted by Jewish scholars and scribes of the Middle Ages, called the Masoretes. Using as their guide the oral and written traditions that had been handed down from the ancient rabbis, the Masoretes worked to preserve and safeguard what they believed to be the definitive text of the Hebrew Bible. The same pious motives led them to suppress all competing textual traditions. In addition to conservation, they were responsible for an exceptionally important innovation. Up to the time of the Masoretes the Hebrew language...

Curtain to Fall on VW Beetle, Icon of Flower Power Fri June 6, 2003 09:09 PM ET FRANKFURT, Germany (Reuters) - The original Volkswagen Beetle, the ubiquitous German car born in the Nazi drive for a "people's car" and later an icon of the hippie revolution, will roll off a production line for the last time this summer. Europe's largest auto maker Volkswagen said Friday the last of its factories still producing the bulky little car -- in Puebla, Mexico -- would close its assembly line after nearly 50 years. In the model's 70-year history, 22 million air-cooled Beetles were...
