(AP) -- A black bear walked into a New Hampshire house through an open door, ate two pears and a bunch of grapes, took a drink from the family fishbowl and grabbed a stuffed bear on its way out the door. Mary Beth Parkinson said the bear apparently took advantage of the open outside door to get into her kitchen Tuesday in Laconia, about 20 miles north of Concord.

POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- A Polk County homeowner fought back against armed home invaders and may have killed one of them. Darlington, SC (AP) - Authorities are investigating whether the fatal stabbing of a 20-year-old South Carolina man was a case of self defense. Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee told multiple media outlets that Gary DuRant died at a hospital Saturday, about four hours after he was stabbed in a Timmonsville home. Deputies say they were told that DuRant forced his way into the home and got into a fight with a woman before he was stabbed.

COLTON, Calif.—A 79-year-old man has shot and killed a burglar climbing into his Southern California home. Colton police Detective Jack Morenberg said Saturday that Richard Contreras shot and killed 37-year-old Fidel Escanuelas (ess-kuh-NWAY'-luss) Thursday. A police news release says Contreras saw a car back into the driveway of his Colton home, heard a noise in a bedroom, found Escanuelas climbing through a window and shot him once in the shoulder with a handgun. HOUSTON – Precinct 4 deputies said an intoxicated man was shot early Monday after he attempted to force his way into the wrong home. Police are investigating a triple shooting that left two men dead and wounded a teenager. The shooting occurred late Monday night in the 400 block of Chapel St., according to Cpl. A Louisville man shot at an intruder in his home Tuesday, according to a Blount County Sheriff’s report. James C. Humberd, Bear Hollow Loop, Louisville, called authorities at 8:53 a.m. Tuesday after he came home and found a man in his home. According to the report, Humberd — who couldn’t be reached Wednesday for comment — told authorities that he was certain he hit the man, but deputies didn’t find any blood at the scene.

Creedmoor, N.C. — A Granville County homeowner exchanged gunfire with a suspected burglar early Tuesday, killing the intruder, authorities said. Sheriff Brindle Wilkins said Clay Ellington was trying to break into a home on Dove Road, near Creedmoor, and fired shots at the homeowner, Richard Chapel. Chapel returned fire, killing Ellington, the sheriff said. Chapel was wounded in the exchange and was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment. His condition was unknown Tuesday afternoon. The case remains under investigation.
